Across industries, many expect the future employee experience will become more innovative and personalised. The defence sector is no exception as work environments, whether at headquarters, operational bases or other secure facilities, have always been critical in shaping productivity and overall mission effectiveness. However, the UK defence industry faces a distinct challenge: many systems remain less intuitive compared to other industries, limiting efficiency and creative problem-solving. At the same time, intensifying global competition and increasingly complex warfare demands, as highlighted in the Future Operating Environment report, mean defence workplaces must become more adaptable, resilient and innovative than ever before.

This gap is becoming increasingly visible with a new generation of talent. Many individuals are trained in highly digital environments, only to encounter legacy or analogue systems when they enter the defence workforce. Addressing this disparity and building on MoD initiatives, such as the Digital Backbone, will be central to building a future-ready defence workforce and employee experience capable of meeting the operational and strategic demands of an increasingly complex world.

The modern demands of the defence workplace

Work environments across all industries were once defined by fixed devices in static locations, where productivity and user experience were often secondary considerations. Today, that model has been fundamentally reshaped. Modern workspaces are far more dynamic, bringing together AI assistants, laptops, mobile devices and SaaS platforms, to support increasingly flexible and remote ways of working. In this context, the digital workplace has become a direct reflection of an organisation’s effectiveness, particularly in defence where it underpins mission readiness. When the experience falls short, the impact is immediate. Friction slows people down and, in high-pressure environments, can often lead to workarounds, whether that’s using unauthorised devices, turning to shadow IT or sharing data outside approved channels. While done with good intent, these behaviours introduce avoidable security and assurance risks in already sensitive operating environments.

The changing world of work signals the next chapter in the evolution of the digital workplace. In practice, this means enabling personnel whether in headquarters or deployed environments to securely access mission-critical applications, such as intelligence platforms and logistics management systems, along with the latest operational data, regardless of device, location and without navigating fragmented systems or duplicative processes.

What comes next?

Looking ahead, several technologies will play a pivotal role in shaping the defence workplace, particularly the convergence of IT Service Management (ITSM) and the Digital Employee Experience (DEX). Rather than relying on reactive support models, next-generation ITSM will operate in the background, continuously monitoring application performance, network health and user experience at the desktop and endpoint level. In practice, this creates a more resilient working environment. Issues can be identified and resolved before they disrupt operations, whether that’s detecting degraded communications equipment in a deployed setting, or flagging failing hardware supporting mission-critical systems. The result is less downtime, fewer interruptions and a more seamless experience for personnel operating in high-pressure environments.

Autonomous computing will also redefine how work gets done. In this model, AI agents operate directly on desktops or local hardware with the same permissions as the user, enabling them to interact with applications, manage files, draft communications and execute complex, multi-step tasks. Critically, these agents will not operate in isolation, they will collaborate with each other across tasks and systems. Human workers shift from being doers to orchestrators, directing and governing teams of agents to achieve mission outcomes at scale. From a defence perspective Autonomous Computing could include automating routine activities like compiling intelligence briefings or updating operational reports across multiple systems. By delegating these types of administrative tasks, personnel can focus on higher value decision-making and strategic planning.

As technologies become more autonomous, immersive and intelligent, the real differentiator will not be the tools themselves, but how intentionally they are designed around the needs of personnel.

Another emerging technology shaping the defence workplace is spatial computing and augmented reality. Through lightweight wearables such as smart glasses, personnel can bring critical data, instructions and digital overlays directly into their field of view. This transforms how tasks are carried out. An engineer can call up real-time schematics while working on complex equipment; a logistics officer can visualise supply movements as they evolve; and military personnel can follow guided steps during high-pressure operational procedures without breaking focus. By embedding information into the task itself, these technologies reduce reliance on multiple screens and systems, while enhancing speed, accuracy and situational awareness in demanding environments.

Building the foundations of the future defence workplace

With so much change on the horizon, the UK defence industry must move quickly to ensure they are ready to fully realise the potential of the future workplace. This starts with addressing the foundations, meaning replacing legacy technologies that can no longer keep pace with modern operational demands, and upgrading security and governance models to support more dynamic, distributed ways of working.

However, technology alone is not enough. Success will depend on fostering a culture that embraces new ways of working while remaining grounded in the values, discipline and operational realities that define the defence sector. A key part of this is balancing innovation with control and ensuring, for example, that personnel in secure or classified environments can adopt new digital tools without compromising security protocols, or that deployed teams can rely on modern, intuitive systems even in constrained or disconnected settings. It also requires building trust in automation and AI, where decisions may carry operational risk. At the same time, organisations must take a more strategic approach to investment, building clear, outcome-focused business cases that balance innovation with accountability, ensuring that transformation is not only ambitious, but sustainable and mission-aligned.

The future of work is mission-critical

In UK defence, the digital workplace has become a core operational capability that underpins readiness, productivity and retention. As technologies become more autonomous, immersive and intelligent, the real differentiator will not be the tools themselves, but how intentionally they are designed around the needs of personnel. Organisations that succeed will treat the digital employee experience as mission-critical, aligning technology, culture and operations to create environments where people can perform at their best, whatever the context.
